Episode 54, "The Broken Wall"

On this rock-tastic episode of the AniManga Podcast, I enlist the aid of Eddy from "Dropping the X" and Dennis from "Cosplay Jam" as we discuss the timeless classic, "BECK." Or "Mongolian Chop Squad," whatever you want to call it. I'll ask for your apologies as I was way too eager to talk about this series and may have music geeked out in this. Next week I'll have Doctor and Foxy from many podcasts on to discuss a seminal gambling series, "Kaiji."

On this episode of The AniManga Podcast, Dominic, my friend Victor and I discuss the closure of American manga publishing company TOKYOPOP, FUNimation's new beta site, and the film Summer Wars, directed by Mamoru Hosoda.

Kiddy Grade Anime Review

Review written by Pwngoatjunkie

After fighting in numerous interstellar wars, mankind forms the Galactic Union to bring stability and to prevent conflicts between different planets. However, disputes between members of the union itself persist. In the Star Century year 0165, the Galactic Organization of Trades and Tariffs (GOTT) was formed, or so it states on the box of this anime set. The only thing you really need to know about this series is that it takes place in space, and the GOTT are the closest thing to police officers in the galaxy.

Now with that out of the way, let’s get to our main characters, Éclair and Lumiere. These two are lower ranking GOTT officials or “ES” members as they’re called. Their job is to settle conflicts and disputes among the planets in the galaxy anyway they can, usually resulting in a nice looking battle scene. Éclair is hands down the more interesting of the duo as she is the most outgoing character, as well as the majority of the fanservice fodder. When the series first starts, her power mainly consists of being able to wield lipstick as a whip to beat the crap out of her enemies. Lumiere on the other hand, is a master hacker and able to merge her mind with any computer, machine, etc. Because of this, Lumiere usually provides most of the background assistance while Éclair does all the rough work.

Unfortunately for Kiddy Grade, this series seriously suffers in that only a few parts of this show are actually worth watching. To avoid any spoilers I’ll split the series up into thirds. The first third of this show consists of standalone episodes used to get the viewers accustomed to our main characters and the other secondary characters that will be somewhat integral to the future plot (?) of the story. These episodes were the first nine and let me tell you, they are the most boring part of this series. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind character building episodes, but these episodes were nothing of the sort. Each one consisted of our main characters going to a new planet and settling a dispute, usually ending with a battle. There were few flashbacks, and we learned virtually nothing about these characters other than what was at face value to begin with.

The middle of this series is where things start to get good. There’s an overarching plot, it’s simple and satisfying, and the action scenes are fantastic. I really felt like this show was one of those that was lacking in the beginning and great in the middle and end, but my hopes were dashed. The last third of this show (consisting of the last 4-5 episodes) really feel like they were tacked on at the last minute to keep the show going. I believe it could have ended earlier, but anime companies, especially Gonzo, like to do this to shows (Black Cat, Speed Grapher). The last part of this show reminded me of a family gathering, seeing as how just about every character was present.

Anyways, was Kiddy Grade the action packed awesome ride that someone told me it would be? No, and Yes. Yes, there was plenty of action and fanservice and it is especially suited for mindless watching. However, at the same time it had a poor beginning that makes it hard to get into. Furthermore, the last third was garbled and even with my brain turned off, I had a hard time accepting what was going on. There was quite a bit of potential in the middle, sadly it was never realized. If your friend has this series, it’s worth a watch, otherwise I would suggest renting it if you can find it.

Score: 6.5/10

Pros: Episodes 10-20

Cons: Episodes 1-9, 21-24
